Renting homes in Australia is becoming more expensive, reaching crisis levels with record-low vacancy rates. Tiny Houses could be the answer.
- Tiny houses in Australia are movable dwellings, often built on wheels or skids.
- The idea of every Australian needing a large block of land is outdated, says Dr Michael Fotheringham, managing director of Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute.
- The Australian Tiny House Association aims to make tiny homes a permanent alternative to traditional houses.
- They want sensible regulations consistent nationwide to avoid unnecessary red tape and costs.
- Advocates believe tiny houses offer a sustainable lifestyle and want legal protections and stability for buyers and renters.Australian Tiny House Association president Janine Strachan seeks lenient zoning regulations to allow for tiny house living. The challenge is that tiny houses are not uniformly accepted across the county and are deemed caravans in most jurisdictions. She states that In WA it’s shocking because unless you’re in a caravan park or camping ground you’re only technically allowed to live in a caravan for three days out of 28.
She’s advocating to legalise “parking spots” for tiny houses, which would see landholders lease out a spot on their property to tiny house owners or renters for much less per week than full-sized houses currently on the rental market.
Tiny homes typically come with a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom, requiring some setup by the owner and according to Tiny home designer Anthony Rechichi “Then hook-up, wire-up … get your plumbing and your electrical works all in place.”
